If your given a brief in which you don't really like the expected outcome then you have to break the rules a little. Think about what aspect of the brief you don't like and question how you can break the rules. You have to think what if I did this? Why can't I do this? You have to try and be playful when trying to break the rules because you can't take it so far that the brief you've been set is no longer recognizable but you also don't want to be put in a box.
The area that you work in greatly influences your worn and also your ability to work. A lot of Artists surround themselves in thing that they have collected, others prefer a clean, clutter free, organized work space. You need to find out what works for you. The pictures below are of my room:

I often get inspired when I'm relaxing so near my bed I have pinned up things that I find inspiring and have collected. Although I get Inspired here I can not work on my bed.
I have a similar setup at my desk but because I'm only at my desk when doing computer work I don't have images for coming up with an Idea instead I have textures pinned up to inspire me.
And of course I have the vital snack, tea and music. Although this set up work for me when I want to do digital work it does not work when I want to do traditional work in fact the only place that does is my floor.
I find it really difficult to work in any other way.
